Question by Jacob: what kind of MTB pedal do u prefer- SPD or eggbeaters?
and why. if SPD which brand do u prefer shimano or wellgo. if eggbeaters which type, plain eggbeaters or the acid or mallet type with a platform to it. which do u think is easier to clip in and out of. what ones would u reccomend, im on a tight budget so nothing more than about 0. also im pretty nervous, i’ve never had clipless b4 and i dont know if i would be able to clip out in time if i ever slipped or fell or something. im a novice mtbr so any help would be great
thanks in advance

I have used both types and I prefer Crank Bros pedals over the SPD type for the simple reason that CB are 4 sided pedals and SPD are only two! I use candy C, mallet and Acid 2 on my bikes and my roadie has the candies on it so no matter what shoe i grab and no matter what bike I grab….ITS A FIT!
Besides, the Mallet pedal has a large enough platform on it that if I am on a trail that I dont feel comfortable on I can always unclip and ride it as a platform pedal too (I know SPD has one that is side specific too but its too heavy) They are both easy to get in and out of but you have to set the degree of float on them (the angle) and you have to find the right position on your shoe for the cleat…everyone is different and I cant give an honest answer to that one . You have to find that yourself. Now as for the unclipping in time…if you are going to fall it is already too late, YOU ARE GOING DOWN! Ride on the road first with one clipped in and one out, switch feet and get used to it ON THE ROAD FIRST. Then go hit an easy trail that you know…walk the trail first if you dont know it and that will tell you if you will have both feet in or one out or none at all and this will help you build confidence in your skills. Otherwise get clipped in and go right out and do it hard…I am certain that you will provide great comic relief for someone somewhere! GL

I really like Crank Brothers pedals and I run them on all of my bikes. I’ve used Eggbeaters, Candys, Mallets, and Acids as well as the Quattros on my road bike. They’re really easy to get used to and if you happen to run into thick mud conditions there is no pedal that beats them for clearance…..SPD’s and most other pedals can cake up so badly that you can’t clip in and will need to scrape away the mud by hand. If you don’t go with Crank Brothers, I’d go with one of the Time Attack pedals instead of SPD’s, but those are just my personal preferences. I can tell you that Crank Brothers really stands behind their products with *excellent* service and warranty, as well as having easily available rebuild parts for everything they make. That’s nice if you plan on keeping your pedals for awhile.
As a beginner, you might find SPD’s easier to clip into because most of them you can just stomp down without much thought…..Crank Brothers aren’t much harder and you’ll pick it up quickly, but SPD’s are a bit easier. When it matters the most is when you have to start on an uphill but with time you can do it with any pedal just like second nature. I’d probably recommend that you try the Candy or Acid…..good lightweight pedals and they have a small platform for shoe support which I like. Eggbeaters are good but some people appreciate some platform. Mallets are super tough (and heavy), but I’d disagree that they make a good platform substitute. I find that when I try to ride those unclipped, the wings tend to want to rotate making my foot less stable. If I’m riding something dangerous or sketchy, I’ll just stay clipped in, or switch out to normal flat platform pedals before that ride.
If you go with Crank Brothers, I’d highly recommend that you get a stainless version. They’re stronger. The cheaper MX eggbeater version and the normal cr-mo version are better than they were a couple years ago, but I still see some broken wings from time to time. Crank Brothers will take care of you, of course, but it’s still nicer when you don’t have a broken pedal. lol. The stainless ones never seem to break. I’ve put two pairs of them through hell with a lot of rock hits, etc. and they’re in great shape.
One advantage that SPD’s have over other pedals is that you can buy a “multi release” cleat for them (if they don’t already come with them in the box). With that cleat you can unclip by just yanking your foot upwards instead of doing the normal heel-twist thing that all pedals use. The advantage there is that if you’re going to endo you have a much better chance of accidentally unclipping (a good thing) while you’re heading over. That helps to prevent doing the Scorpion King thing.
Hope this helps some….just remember that any pedal you pick will do fine and you’ll learn the motions with just a little practice. Being clipped in really does improve your bike handling a LOT and makes it easier to clear tough sections of trail when compared with having your feet bounce off of platform pedals.
