Both pedals are about the same price, but the speedplays are much lighter, only 2/3 the weight of the shimano pedals. There are other choices, Look Keo pedals are also very well thought of, and also lighter than the shimano pedals. Speedplay cleats are much more expensive to replace than Look or Shimano cleats. All of these pedals work very well, the Speedplay pedals have the advantage of double sided entry, but the float will feel odd at first, your foot will be secured to the pedal, but it can rotate freely, you feel as if your foot is on top of an ice cube. Choose whichever one appeals most to you, there is no bad choice here.

It’s mostly a matter of preference. Both work well, but the Speedplay pedals have nearly 3 times the float range. That is pretty typical.
I personally use Speedplay, so I will admit my bias right off. I have tried others and did not like them, but really liked the Speedplay right off. My pedal stroke is not perfectly up and down, there is a little motion in the knee. It is more than 6 degrees. So these pedals just work for me. Plus the float is free float with almost no spring tension to fight.
The Shimano pedals have a fair amount of resistance to motion, meaning that there really isn’t any significant free float.
I have also had mine for about 10 years with only a yearly greasing with a grease gun as the sole maintenance needed.
My last comment, as can be seen by my testimony is that Speedplay has only enhanced the original design, never really needing to make massive changes or concessions for the sake of style. You can still buy the X5 pedal that I have today, 10 years later. That’s staying power. That’s testimony to getting the design right the 1st time. But that’s just my opinion.

I have both brands. I find they both work for me once I’m clipped in. The Speedplay double sided is easier to get into. I don’t notice much difference getting out. I think the Light Actions don’t float as much as the x-series so I can’t comment on how they will feel pedaling. The Shimano cleats are cheaper to replace and easier to walk in. The Speedplays work best when you use a bit of dry-lube on them. I have not seen a light action cleat. If it is similar to the X series, the wire retaining clip in the cleat can get jammed by fine gravel and you can’t get your cleat engaged. It has happened to me a couple of times on county rides when I didn’t pay attention to where I was putting my foot down and it can be a pain to clear it out. The speedplays have been very durable. I’ve got thousands of miles on them and no hint of wear on the pedals. I get about 3000 miles on a pair of cleats. The grease port is great for regular greasing which I think really helps durability. The Shimano pedal has developed play on me a couple of times which I’ve been able to snug up.

    get spd

    seriously

at least be sure you can walk in the shoes you get

or you are going to hate riding

it isn;t going to make 2c worth of difference either, to your riding

get shoes you can walk in

most road pedal/shoes don;t allow it

unless you like walking like a duck
