Q&A: Are all three bolt cleats compatible with SPD SL and LOOK?

Product Information

Question by MrRobot111: Are all three bolt cleats compatible with SPD SL and LOOK?
I have been looking for clipless pedals for my road bike and wasn’t sure whether all shoes with three bolt systems were compatible with both LOOK and SPD SL.
Which type are better for an intermediate commuter/enthusiast.

If you are looking at brand name shoes then yes they will, they usually design then to fit either system.
The three bolt system I think was developed by the guys at S, for their SPD system, so I would say that any shoe with the 3 bolt setup will fit cleats from S, there are a few different ‘look’ style cleat systems going around, I haven’t used them much so can’t comment about cleat to shoe compatibility, I usually prefer the SPD system,I seem to suffer less cleat pull out with them.

    Nope they aren’t
    far from it actually

Shimano doesn’t fit on look and otherwise as an example

for shoes yes the spd-sl and look three bolt patterns are compatable. the cleats are not compatable with other pedals. look was the first to use the wedge three bolt cleat system. either is good system. i use the look pedal/cleat set-up. see which set-up is lighter and cheaper thats the one to get. usually the look set-up.
