I have a pair of Wellgo WPD-96A clipless pedals, I was wondering if I could get any brand of SPD style cleats(shimano,wellgo, etc.) without them not fitting or whatever. thanks.

all SPD cleats will fit all SPD pedals, yes

but don;t get SPD-L, that is a road bike system

    You want to get clips that are designed for that pedal. The clips and pedals are different between manufactures and using a clip with a different brand pedal can be hazardous. I found out the hard way by using clips from M520 pedals with pedals from Nashbar. I could clip in but clipping out was difficult even with the tension set to the lowest setting. Shimano has recommendations of what clips to use with what pedals. The clips that came with the Nashbar pedals worked a lot better. I just bought M520 pedals for all my bikes. It wasn’t worth the risk struggling to unclip, I almost killed my self.

    No, not unless they specifically state they are compatible with SPD pedals. Generally, SPD-compatible cleats mean they are compatible with the 2-hole screw spacing on SPD-compatible shoes.
